Tree Removal Cost in Monterey County: What Sets the Price
Tree removal in Monterey County runs from about $400 for a small, easy-access tree to $2,500 or more for a large tree near structures; trimming starts around $250. Size, access, what sits underneath, wood condition, stump grinding and permits decide where a job lands.

A tree removal quote can look arbitrary until you know what the crew is pricing. Two trees of the same height can be a half-day job or a two-day job depending on what sits under them, how the truck gets in, and whether the wood is sound. Here is how we price tree work across Salinas and Monterey County, and what you can do to get a quote you can compare.
The ranges we quote
Trimming starts around $250 for a single small-to-medium tree with easy access. Removals run from about $400 for a small tree in an open yard to $2,500 and up for a large tree over a roof, fence or driveway. Stump grinding is quoted per stump on top of the removal, and hauling the wood away is part of every removal quote unless you ask us to leave rounds for firewood or chips for mulch.
Those numbers are wide on purpose. The rest of this article is what decides where your tree lands inside them.
What moves the price
Height and trunk size
Bigger trees take more cuts, more rigging and more debris handling. A 20-foot ornamental can often come down in sections from the ground or a ladder. A mature Monterey pine or eucalyptus needs a climber, ropes and a lowering system so each piece comes down under control.
Access
If we can back a chipper to the tree, the job moves fast. If every branch has to be carried through a side gate, around a pool or down a flight of steps, labor goes up. Narrow Carmel lots and hillside Prunedale parcels are the usual reasons a quote climbs on access alone.
What is underneath
A tree in an open field can be felled in one piece. A tree leaning over a roof, a fence line or a neighbor's yard has to be taken down piece by piece and lowered, which is slower and needs more crew. If a tree touches a power line, the utility has to make that line safe before anyone works in it, which adds scheduling time rather than cost.
Condition of the wood
Dead and decayed trees are harder, not easier. Brittle limbs can't take a rope the way live wood can, so rigging is more careful and sometimes slower. Storm-damaged trees that are already split or hung up in other trees fall into the same category.
Stump and cleanup
Grinding the stump flush or below grade lets you replant, lay artificial turf or build a patio over the spot. Leaving the stump is cheaper today but usually costs more later if you change your mind.
Permits and protected trees
Pacific Grove, Carmel-by-the-Sea, Pebble Beach and many HOAs protect certain species and sizes, and Pacific Grove's Monarch habitat adds rules around pine and eucalyptus. Where a permit or review applies, we check the rules for your address and handle the paperwork before any cut. That adds lead time, and sometimes an arborist report, but it is far cheaper than a violation.
Trim or remove?
Removal is not always the answer. A healthy tree that is just too dense, too low over the roof or shading out a lawn often needs structural pruning or crown thinning instead. A tree that is dead, leaning toward a structure, lifting a foundation or cracked at a main union is a removal conversation. We will tell you which one we see, and if it is a keeper we will say so.
For hillside and wildland-edge lots, the question is often about fuel rather than a single tree. Our guide to defensible space clearing covers how that work is scoped.
